Frequently Asked Questions

Is it still worth getting solar panels in Australia?

Yes. Australia has some of the highest electricity prices and strongest solar irradiance in the world, which makes the financial case for rooftop solar stronger here than in most countries. Most residential systems pay for themselves within 3 to 7 years, depending on system size, energy usage, and local feed-in tariff rates. With battery storage, savings compound further by reducing reliance on grid power outside daylight hours.

The 20% rule is a sizing guideline that recommends your solar system generate approximately 20% more electricity than your estimated annual consumption. The buffer accounts for system losses from heat, wiring, and inverter efficiency, as well as seasonal variation in sunlight hours and gradual panel degradation over time. A system sized with this rule in mind tends to deliver consistent savings year-round rather than falling short during winter months or high-demand periods.

For most Australian homes, yes. The average household uses between 15 and 20 kWh per day. A 10kW system in a location with good sun exposure can generate 35 to 45 kWh on a clear day. The more relevant question is whether you have battery storage to use that energy at night. Without it, excess generation is exported to the grid at feed-in tariff rates, which are substantially lower than what you pay for grid power.

The upfront cost remains the most significant barrier for most households, even with available rebates. Solar output is also weather-dependent and drops during extended overcast periods. Homes with heavily shaded roofs, limited roof space, or poor north-facing orientation may see reduced returns. A professional assessment before purchase is the most reliable way to understand what a system will realistically produce at your specific property.

1. Reduces electricity bills from the first day of operation
2. Generates income through feed-in tariffs on power exported to the grid
3. Increases property value
4. Reduces household carbon emissions
5. Provides protection from grid electricity price increases
6. Low maintenance once installed
7. Long system lifespan, with panels typically warrantied for 25 years
8. Compatible with battery storage for overnight use
9. Scales with demand through system upgrades
10. Eligible for government rebates and incentive programs across Australia

A solar-only system without battery storage will power your home during daylight hours but not at night. To run a house predominantly on solar, you need a correctly sized panel system paired with adequate battery storage. In practice, most Australian homes with solar and battery storage still maintain a grid connection as a backup and draw from it only minimally. Full off-grid setups are possible but require a larger system and battery bank, and are better suited to properties where grid connection is impractical or unavailable.
